How To Read Food Labels

Knowing the ingredients on food labels is the major key on the way to healthier living. When you want to start a whole food life without processed food in your diet, you need to know how to read the ingredient's list on labels.

In today's world, especially in the United States, the food isn't the same as it used to be. There are a lot of chemicals on the market, that haven't been properly studied and researched, whereas some of those chemicals are banned in Europe. The big food companies try to make food cheaper, costs lower, make it last longer, increase your appetite, make you addicted to it (in most cases equals make you fat) and decrease its nutritional value.

If you think that it was ok to eat Cheerios 20 years ago and now you feed them to your child, think twice. Today Cheerios are made mostly from GMO sugar, GMO cornstarch, calcium carbonate (in other words chalk) and trisodium phosphate (industrial strength cleaner!). Surprised? Cheerios and other convenient, non-organic cereal is a dead food. The vitamins that are loaded in are artificial, there are no living enzymes, it has nothing to do with real food.

The companies make sure, that the box of a product looks like a piece of art, while full of misleading healthy promises and deceptive phrases to make us buy it. The truth is, that you have to find it. By law, some of ingredients don't even have to be listed on the label! Even in a natural food store, always read what you are buying.

  1. If you can't pronounce it, don't buy it. Although the label says, all-natural, derived from something natural or natural flavor, if you can't pronounce the ingredient, don't even bother.

  2. Aspartame is a dangerous and deadly excitotoxin. There are over 90 different health side effects associated with the consumption of aspartame. Aspartame changes the ratio of amino acids in the blood, blocking or lowering the levels of serotonin, tyrosine, dopamine, norepinephrine, and adrenaline. According to Dr. Mercola, aspartame is the most dangerous substance added to the food.

  3. Sugar is the most addictive substance, a drug that is highly processed and has absolutely no nutritional value. Pure unprocessed maple syrup or raw honey are healthier options.

  4. High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) makes you fat and is highly addictive.

  5. Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) is also an excitotoxin. It increases your appetite, makes you fat and causes all types of medical problems.

  6. Hydrogenated Oil or Partially Hydrogenated Oil is a trans fat. It makes you fat, causes a heart disease and other medical issues.

  7. Natural and Artificial Flavors, Spices = man-made chemicals. Even though it says “natural”,   doesn't mean it comes from nature. This is where the food industry lobbied Congress to pass the law allowing chemicals that are not natural at all to be called “natural flavors”. This one term could be hundreds of chemicals and when they are combined together, they create a new chemical that is incredibly dangerous. MSG can also be classified as a spice. If you ask them what spices they put in, they won't tell you. Because they are not natural.

  8. Artificial Colors are simply another forms of deadly chemicals. Stay away from them!

  9. Dextrose, Sucrose, Fructose are chemically made sweeteners.

  10. Enriched Bleached Wheat Flour or Enriched Bleached White Flour is a flour stripped down of all nutrients, without fiber. It is highly processed in a chemical environment and acts as a drug when it's ingested. Try to use organic wheat or grain flour instead.

  11. Homogenized or Pasteurized products. Pasteurization destroys vitamins and interferes with calcium absorption. It is a process of heating a liquid to kill bacteria and disable certain enzymes. Homogenization is a more recently invented process and it has been called “the worst thing that dairymen did to milk”. It makes dairy products scar the arteries in our bodies and is a leading cause of heart disease.

  12. Sugar-free means loaded with artificial sweeteners and fat-free is loaded with chemicals and/or sugars. This is how the food companies deceive us in order to buy their food.

  13. Sodium nitrate, Sodium nitrite – Sodium nitrite is a salty preservative found in processed meat like sausages, bacon, hot dogs, etc. It is added to improve the length of storage, color and taste. Sodium nitrate is a natural antioxidant found in leafy vegetables. When digested, sodium nitrate becomes sodium nitrite in the body. Both they form nitrosamines – a known carcinogen when mixed with protein rich foods. Nitrosamines creates cell damage in the body. Even in moderation, eating these meats is risky.
